You’ll have all us Apple geeks up in arms saying you are still sitting on the fence on the iPhone. I thought I’d tell you what I use mine for. Note though that I have an iPod Touch, not an iPhone, so mine doesn’t include the phone, or location based stuff on the phone. It is still a very compelling device though.
1. Answer your email anywhere. Such a small but easy to use device means you aren’t stuck to your desk all the time (similar to blackberry). Can also read and display MS office formats.
2. Full web browsing capabilities (except flash), which means you can actually do useful research on the device and send people links.
3. Track your expenses. With apps like iXpenseIt that you can track and characterise all your expenses, then export the data to your spreadsheet/accounts program. You can even photograph your receipts so you don’t lose them!
4. Shopping list. Keep it in your pocket with your phone.
5. Note taking. I have twice sat in conferences and taken notes on the iPod. Advantages are that it is not so big that its a hassle, and you can just email yourself the notes afterwards. Also useful for quick notes to yourself while on the road, or in bed at night (I’m just sad now!).
6. Address book with great search (now) and custom fields for your notes. Great for me as I am hopeless with names.
7. Very usable blogging tools from WordPress and others.
8. Twitter, Facebook and MySpace apps to keep on top of that social media. Friendfeed site also iPhone specific.
9. Perhaps the most useful feature if you have a business and young family is you can keep films on it, so when your child is howling give them Kungfu panda to watch. It’s amazing how well that works!
Oh and you can play music, podcasts (like yours), show photos and video of your products and more.
While we are on the subject of communication, has anyone used Skypes business accounts? They look like a cheap way to get a separate line, and make calls, but I would be interested in peoples experience.
